<lst>"A Journey Toward Independence" — an annual conference that brings together brain injury survivors, their families, friends, rehabilitation professionals and students — will be held on Oct. 4 and 5 at the Johnson Center at George Mason University in Fairfax. The keynote address will be delivered by Jane Woods, the Virginia secretary of health and human resources and Al Condeluci, a nationally known speaker on disability issues.

Fees for the two-day event are $10 for survivors, $40 for a family member, $35 for students and $75 for professionals. Fees cover all sessions and include breakfast and lunch daily, a Friday evening reception and refreshment breaks. Registration brochures can be obtained by calling Helpline 703-569-1855. <lst>CHADD of Northern Virginia will hold a panel presentation Sept. 19 on "Couples with AD/HD — Living and Loving." The presentation will feature couples who will explain how their relationships are affected by AD/HD. They will also provide suggestions and tips for attendees. The program is free and open to the public.

On Oct. 17, the organization will hold a program on "Strategies for Social Success: Skills for Children and Adults" presented by Cheryl Wietz, L.C.S.W.

Meetings will begin at 7 p.m. The panel presentation will run from approximately 7:30-9 pm. The meeting will be held in the multipurpose lecture room at Fairfax High School, 3500 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax.

The State Health Department urges people to continue to report dead birds to local health departments but to understand that not all birds need to be tested for West Nile virus. This virus is spread to birds, humans, horses and other mammals through the bite of an infected mosquito. The Virginia Department of Health recommends that people wear long, loose and light-colored clothing, use insect repellent and check window and door screens for openings to prevent against mosquitoes.

INOVA Hospital Marked its 100th lung transplant on Aug. 10. This hospital has had the only lung transplant program in the Washington, D.C., area since 1991. The Inova Lung Transplant Program is part of the Inova Transplant Center, the area’s only full-service transplant center offering heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver and bone-marrow transplantation.

Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services, serving mental health patients in the Washington area, is searching for patient, caring, responsible men and women to befriend isolated community members suffering from a mental illness. One hour a week for at least a year may include phone calls, walks, shopping, dining, movies, museums, games, etc. Volunteers will be trained and provided ongoing support in mental health illnesses and on how to best help the ones with whom they are matched.
