King St. Crash Claims Life

Falls Church Man Charged with Manslaughter, DWI

Alexandria police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at 1:05 a.m. Mondat in the 4700 block of King Street.

The vehicle, a 1997 Honda Accord, was traveling east on King Street near Dawes Avenue when the driver lost control. After striking two utility poles, the car crossed King Street and came to rest in the westbound lanes.

There were four occupants, including the driver. Passenger Francisco Zepeda-Izquierdo, a 16-year-old boy from Falls Church, was taken to Inova Alexandria Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Another passenger, a 21-year-old Falls Church man, was flown by Medstar helicopter to Washington Hospital Center where he is being treated for lacerations and other non-life threatening injuries. The third passenger, an 18-year-old Falls Church man, was taken by ambulance to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he is being treated for a broken pelvis.

THE DRIVER, Estaurdo Vinicio Monzon-Lopez, was arrested and charged with involuntary vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. The 27-year-old man is a resident of 3603 Barcroft View Terrace in Falls Church. He is being held without bond at the Alexandria jail.

The Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident. Initial indications are that both alcohol and speed were contributing factors.

Investigators are searching for additional witnesses to that fatal accident. Officers would like to speak with the driver of a red, two-door Mercedes-Benz which was seen in the area of the crash at King Street and Dawes Avenue. Police believe that the driver of the Mercedes-Benz may have seen the silver, four-door 1997 Honda Accord just prior to, or at the time of, the accident. The Mercedes driver or any other witness is asked to call crash investigator Officer Tim Kyburz at 703-838-3858.
