Caren Hearne is the director of Mt. Vernon’s productions. "We are performing The Foreigner this fall and will be staging The King and I for the Cappies in the spring," she said.
"The Foreigner was written by Larry Shue who performed in the D.C. metropolitan area on many occasions before his death in the 1980s. I know many of the people who worked with him so the play is particularly important to me."
Hearne is excited about the fact that students have been cast in very nontraditional roles for this particular play.
"The play is about racism and the message really is that only stupid people are racists," she said. "We have a very diverse population at Mt. Vernon and the students are very excited about playing parts that do not represent their own ethnic backgrounds."
Cast members are: Austin Cobb, Albert Lawrence, Daniela Jagemann, Greg Maheu, Melissa Bryce, Chris Adcock and Brandon Harrington. The assistant director is Sarah Morgan.
