Northern Virginia Friends School at 2854 Hunter Mill Road in Oakton will host six open houses this fall at the new site on Hunter Mill Road just north of the intersection with Route 123 in Oakton. Families will have an opportunity to tour new classroom spaces, learn about the interior and exterior planning and the school's educational philosophy.
The evening open houses will be from 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23; Tuesday, Nov. 5; Thursday, Nov. 14; and Monday, Nov. 18. Weekend open houses from 4-5:30 p.m. will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, and Sunday, Dec. 8.

The Langley High School Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band have been selected to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City as part of the Ensemble Spotlight Series. The bands will be in residence in New York City from April 24-28 and will each perform a 40-minute concert as part of Mid-America Productions' 2002-03 at Carnegie Hall. Andrew Gekoskie, director of bands at Langley, said the bands were selected based on audition tapes from the last five years.
Registration is ongoing for fall classes at the McLean Community Center (MCC). More than 50 classes for children are designed with learning in mind. Sports classes like Soccer and Kids Sports introduce children to the rules of the game, and parent-and-child classes allow parents to spend quality time with their children as they learn. Other classes include FunFit, a parent-and-child active-play class utilizing creative movement and games to develop motor skills, coordination and socialization. Little Scientist’s classes, for children 3-8, are aimed at introducing children to scientific concepts. Other classes include Chemistry of Color and Light and Super Sensations. James Madison High School Bands and Color Guard kicked off the fall citrus/pecan fundraising drive on Oct. 14. Students will take orders throughout the town for citrus from Florida and for pecans from South Carolina for delivery the week of Dec. 9. The fundraiser will raise funds for instruments. The National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) has announced that four Virginia high school students have won national awards in NFPW’s annual Youth Journalism Competition. Among them isTom Berry of McLean High School in McLean who won an Honorable Mention in Graphics: “Absolut Facts.”

Youth Projects Awards luncheon held during the annual conference in Bismarck, N.D., Sept. 19-21, 2002. A total of 229 first place entrants from state contests competed in the NFPW contest, many of which were held in cooperation with their scholastic press associations. Students competed in 12 categories: editorials, opinion, news, features, cartooning, reviews, graphics,
single page layout, sports stories, columns, feature photos, and sports photos.
Spring Hill Elementary School invites the public to saddle up and ride on over to its annual Book Fair fund raiser, Reading Roundup. Lasso a big helping of Scholastic books, calendars, games and more! The Book Fair hours of operation are: Monday, Oct. 21, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Tuesday, 22 Oct., 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 23, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 24, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Friday, Oct. 25 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Don't miss the big hoedown on Family Night on Oct. 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thereíll be a live folk singer, face painting, and a western game with prizes. Donuts for Dad & Muffins for Moms on Oct. 24, 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. will feature campfire coffee and breakfast vittles for early rising ranch hands and working folk. This is also a great time to rustle up some gifts for the holidays. Payment may be made in the form of cash, check (made out to Spring Hill PTO), Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. Proceeds from the Book Fair will support the works of the PTO.
