You may have heard of The Madeira School or even driven past our famous white fences (with the horses, hopefully inside the fences!) but beyond "the white fence" at the other end of our campus, you will find much more than what meets the eye when driving on Georgetown Pike – our glorious Chapel Auditorium. Equipped with a 590-seat theater, double-rail fly system, professional sound and lighting equipment, a dance studio, a choir room, and a scene shop, Madeira theater is a unique experience all unto its own. As students at an all-girls, day and boarding school, many of our actresses do play male characters, which can make life onstage very interesting. Our thespians and techies produce two main productions, a fall play and a winter musical, and finish off the year with upperclassmen-directed one acts. Last November we had great success with our fall show, "The Good Times Are Killing Me," by Lynda Barry. The plot focused on the developing friendship between a white girl and an African-American girl during the 1950s in America. We were very proud that we had two Cappies nominations and our first win from this show: Kate Lumpkin for Best Supporting Actress in a Play and Ashlie Butler, who won the award for Best Comedic Actress in a Play. In February, we presented an all-women's show, "Quilters," by Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek, which highlighted scenes from the lives of pioneer women living on the Plains in the 19th century. This fall, we are producing "The Good Woman of Setzuan," by theater master Bertolt Brecht, a tale of love, greed, courage, trickery, ambition, secrets and scandal. On Nov. 7 and 8, join us for this play and take part in the search for kindness and humanity in a world driven by money and power. This winter, we will present "Kiss Me, Kate!" by Cole Porter; this comic, musical take-off of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" will be performed February 27 and 28. Note: we are looking for dedicated teenage guys with voice and/or theater experience to add to our cast.
