Jonathan and Justin Clearfield, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Brad Clearfield of Burke, were named Top Student for grades seven and eight, respectively, during the summer Cadet Program. Jonathan also met the requirements of the Newly Assigned Personnel (NAP) test and is now a full member of the cadet corps in good standing.

Stacy Fullerton of Burke participated in this summer’s Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), an internationally recognized program of musical study and performance. Stacy is a junior at W.T. Woodson High School. She is one of approximately 300 students selected from auditions across the country and abroad to work with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), BU faculty and world-renowned visiting artists. While in residence at Tanglewood, these young musicians and singers kept up a demanding schedule of rehearsals, practices, master classes and concerts.
Laura Olson of Springfield and Katlyn Donohue and John Robert Adams of Burke recently completed the Pre-Collegiate Program in Early American History at the College of William and Mary, receiving an up close and personal experience with American history plus four hours of college credit. More than 50 high-school juniors and seniors from 14 states participated in the month-long program.
The program ran from July 1-27, and during the last week, participants learned firsthand the ways of Colonial American life through activities such as brick-making with Colonial Williamsburg brick-mason interpreters. Students learned Colonial food ways at CW’s Palace Kitchen and the Wythe Kitchen and learned 18th century games and leisure activities at the Robert Carter House.
Meredith Huddleston of Fairfax High School; Kathleen McCrory, Megan McCrory and Stephanie McKee of Lake Braddock Secondary School; Brandon Baither, Carolyn Glidden and Kelly Ray of Robinson Secondary School; and Quang Nguyen, Paul Phelps and Laura Pilkington of West Springfield High School were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. The semifinalists will contend for a finalist position in hopes of obtaining one of the 8,000 scholarships totaling $30 million to be awarded next spring.

Woodson students were named Commended Students in the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Program: Kyle Brennis, Mark Brewster, Krista Carlson, Christopher Carr, Lauren Dockery, Heather Duke, Rebecca Fall, Michael Foroobar, Darren Forsythe, Stacy Fullerton, Rebecca Hardy, Ross Hartman, Lee Hausler, Rebecca Islin, Olivia Johnson, Eldina Kapetanovic, Rachel Kaplan, Stefanie Kline, Rebecca Lafever, Kate Laflin, Kelly McDonald, Owen Miller, John Millward, Michael Munoz, Mohammad Nilforoush, Ramin Ostadhosseini, Feliks Pleszczynski, Jenica Semler, Colleen Sheehan, Scott Siclari and Robin Smith. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation will be presented by the principal to these students.
