'Service in Our Schools'
<bt>Volunteer Fairfax is teaming with Fairfax County Public Schools, Oct. 26, for VolunteerFest 2002, a community-wide day of service, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Registration forms are due Oct. 9.
The kickoff rally takes place at 8:30 a.m., at Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road in Falls Church, and will feature local celebrities, high-school bands and cheerleaders.
This year's theme, "Service in Our Schools," focuses on the needs of local schools and will provide an opportunity for citizen involvement, community education and awareness, and hands-on service projects at school facilities, including cleaning, landscaping, mulching and tutoring.
Businesses, families, individuals, civic organizations, Scout troops, faith communities and school groups are invited to participate.
For more information or to register, call Volunteer Fairfax at 703-246-3460 or visit the Web at www.volunteerfairfax.org.
<sh>Wanted: School-System Auditor
<bt>Fairfax County Public Schools will be soliciting bids from independent consultants for a school-system audit, which will be geared toward all aspects of the school system, from educational effectiveness to instructional and support services operation and the "return on investment" of the current appropriation practices.
Based on discussions earlier in the year, the School Board originally had been counting on the Fairfax County Public Schools Education Foundation, a nonprofit public-private partnership that uses private funds to spur progress and advancement in public schools, to raise the funds necessary to hire the auditor. However, School Board member Jane Strauss (Dranesville), chairman of the finance and budget committee, was recently informed the foundation will not be able to pursue the fund-raising effort due to other commitments.
On Thursday, Sept. 26, Strauss recommended schools staff create a draft Request for Proposal, due Oct. 1, seeking the auditor. The scope of the audit will be one of the topics discussed during an Oct. 7 work session at the Burkholder Center, 10700 Page Ave., Fairfax.
The School Board did place $250,000 into a place-holder account to cover the cost of an auditor, if needed, when it passed the FY ‘03 budget in May.
