Cruising in a red Ferrari probably seemed like a good idea at the time to Chantilly resident Eric Jones. Trouble was, say Fairfax County police, he was speeding, his driver's license had been suspended — and the car wasn't his. As a result, when they caught up with Jones, 21, of 14626 Boac Circle in the Chantilly Meadows community, they arrested him.
According to police, Officer Heath McKennedy was patrolling the Dulles Toll Road, eastbound, last Thursday, Nov. 7, at 10:10 p.m., when he saw a red Ferrari traveling at a high rate of speed. It was near Sunrise Valley and Soapstone drives in Reston.
The Ferrari exited the toll road onto Wiehle Avenue, and police say its driver then allegedly made a right turn on a red light where a sign prohibited it. McKennedy tried stopping it, activating his vehicle's lights and siren. But police say the driver — later identified as Jones — reportedly ignored him and kept going.
McKennedy followed the Ferrari until Jones lost control and spun out. There were no injuries or damages. Police say Jones worked for an automobile dealership where the Ferrari was being serviced, and he allegedly took the car without the owner's or dealership's permission.
Police charged him with unauthorized use of a vehicle, speeding to elude, reckless driving, driving on a suspended operator's license and failing to obey a highway sign. He was held on $7,000 bond at the Adult Detention Center.
