Three Cheers For Teachers

Alexandria celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week with a block party on King Street.

The event was sponsored by the city, the Alexandria Education Partnership, the Alexandria City Public schools and corporations.

"We are here to let teachers know just how much we value them," said Mayor Kerry J. Donley. "We appreciate their hard work. We appreciate their dedication and we appreciate the time they spend, every day, with our children."

Andrew Blair, the chairman of the Partnership, agreed. "We are here today to show all of you just how much Alexandria's business community values your service to our community," Blair said.

THE THREAT OF rain kept the crowd for the first annual event smaller than anticipated. There were drawings for prizes such as tickets on the Mt. Vernon Cruise from Potomac Riverboats and a gift certificate to Landmark Mall.

Businesses purchased tables on the last three blocks of King Street and gave coupons and trinkets to teachers, administrators, building engineers, secretaries and all of those who support the education of Alexandria's children, in public or private schools.

The George Washington Middle School Jazz Band set the right tone for the celebration. Music could be heard up and down King Street as people walked around.

The goal is to make the event an annual occurrence.

"This is just a good way to bring the school year to a close," Donley said. "Everybody have a good time," he said as he looked out over the crowd.
