Town Center Opens Front Door

Terrabrook Properties opened the final section of New Dominion Parkway last Thursday, connecting the road to Fairfax County Parkway. Both Terrabrook and local officials hope the finished road will bring more traffic off of the parkway into the town center. The connection is meant to ease congestion on Reston Parkway and to bring more visitors from the west of Reston, from places like Herndon and Loudoun County.

It cost a total of $3.28 million to extend New Dominion from Reston Parkway to the Fairfax County Parkway. The project caps off $45 million worth of Terrabrook-funded road construction projects around the Reston Town Center since 1986. The road projects were proffered by Terrabrook in exchange for the zoning changes that made construction of the Town Center possible

AT A CEREMONY last Thursday to open the new section of road, Tom D’Alesandro, vice president with Terrabrook, called the interchange of New Dominion and Fairfax County Parkway "the town center’s new front door.

"The money is spent," D’Alesandro said. "We’re getting something that really has some value."

Fairfax County Supervisor Catherine M. Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill) was also on hand to christen the new road. She pointed out the duality of Reston, as a place where residents can live and work.

"It’s very important we note that Reston is a world class community, a great place for people to live," Hudgins said. "But we also need to know that this is a major business center."

Chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and Reston resident, Katherine K. "Kate" Hanley (D) said the new interchange will have "major implications for the Hanley household.

"We talk a lot about huge transportation projects like the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, or the mixing bowl," Hanley said. "But I’m not going to drive over either of those roads today. I’ll probably drive on New Dominion more than once."
