In time for back-to-school, the national Hair Cuttery Share-A- Haircut Campaign will donate a free haircut to an underprivileged child for each full-priced haircut purchased from Aug. 1-15. Working through partnerships with social service agencies, the goal is to donate 50,000 cuts this year.

ESL and Immigrant Ministries is recruiting volunteers to teach a small class of adult immigrants to speak, read, and write English one day or night a week for two hours. Orientation and training will be Sunday, Aug. 11 from 1-5:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 8 from 1-5:30 p.m. or Saturday, Aug. 24 from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 8 from 1-5:30 p.m. Call Jean Berg at the Arlington County Volunteer Office at 703-228-1760.

The Arlington County Fair, whose theme this year is “Celebrating the Best of Arlington,” will be held Aug. 15-18 at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center, 3501 South Second St.

The fair will feature amusements, concerts, food and other entertainment at no admission charge, in addition to competitive exhibits where ribbons are given in more than 500 subject matter classes and four age divisions.

New at the fair this year, residents of the City of Falls Church are eligible to enter the competitions.

Competitive exhibits on display will include photography, vegetables, ceramics and flowers.

The fair will include indoor and outdoor events with opening ceremonies on Aug. 15 at 6:15 p.m.

Free air-conditioned shuttle buses will be running round-trip from three locations, the Arlington Career Center, Washington-Lee High School and the Ballston Metro stop, beginning one hour before the fair opens and ending one hour after the fair closes.

The Arlington/Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless is seeking volunteers to be on-call to help clients in their moving process or assist in pick up or delivery of furniture donations.

Special donations are needed to assist families including Target/Walmart gift certificates to help in purchasing clothing for children in the Adopt-a-Family program; food for the food pantry (stocks are low at this time — please call or e-mail for list of needed items); and a computer, TV, or other furniture items for a young family with small children who will soon be moving to their first apartment. Tiny Tots and Preschool Programs are available at Long Branch Nature Center, 625 S. Carlin Springs Road, 703-228-6535, and Gulf Branch Nature Center, 3608 N. Military Road, 703-228-3403 . Programs are designed for children 1-1/2-2 years and preschool children. Morning and afternoon events available. There is a $1 fee per child, payable on the day of the program. Call for reservations.
