Fairfax County Health Department Clinics
Fairfax County runs five district health department clinics that are open to all Fairfax County residents. These clinics take patients on a walk-in basis, except Thursday when patients are taken by appointment only. Nursing appointments are also available. These clinics offer immunizations, travel shots, pregnancy testing and prenatal care, treatment and testing for communicable diseases, dental services for children up to the age of 18, speech and hearing services and WIC, a program for women, infants and children, which provides food stamps and formula for children up to the age of five. Eligibility for WIC is determined on the basis of income. A flat fee is charged for immunization and testing. The charge for other services is determined on a sliding, income-based scale.

Fairfax County Health Department also runs the Community Health Care Network, offering primary healthcare services for low-income, uninsured County residents who cannot afford medical care for themselves and for their families. This three clinics are run on the basis of income eligibility. These clinics are open to Fairfax County residents who meet the income requirement. Patients seeking treatment at these three clinics must be members. Membership can be obtained by applying to one of the clinics and meeting the eligibility requirements. A clinic for those with low-income, Bailey's Health Center charges on a sliding scale on the basis of income. Currently, Bailey's Health Center is treating patients with diabetes, hypertension, asthma, epilepsy, cancer and AIDs. There is a waiting list of about a year for new members seeking regular check-ups.

South County Health Center is a family clinic offering check-ups and testing for members. It currently takes approximately three months to become a member. Once a member, appointments can be scheduled to meet with doctors at the clinic. Dental services are not available. One referral to an outside physician is available for members. Co-payments are charged for visits with clinic MDs, medicines and referral visits with outside doctors. Fees are calculated on a sliding scale based on income. School immunizations, STD, HIV and pregnancy testing are available for members.

Fairfax Health Department also runs the following adult day health care centers for impaired adults who do not need institutionalization, but cannot live independently. The program is multi-disciplinary and designed to help its participants achieve an optimal level of health, prevent further disabilities and provide respite for family members and caregivers. ADHC provides recreation, supervision, and health care to adults with physical, mental, or social impairments in a pleasant, protective setting. Breakfast, lunch, and snack are served daily. Transportation services are provided by Fastran within designated areas. Charges for the Centers are based on a sliding rate scale. Fees are based on the Health Department's sliding fee scale that looks at household size (client and/or client and spouse) and gross income. Fees range between $8.00 and $61.00/day. The fee scale is subject to change July 1st of each year. Medicaid is accepted.

WWC/NOVA is the first regional center of Whitman-Walker Clinic and was established as a distinct program for residents of Northern Virginia who are affected by HIV/AIDS and members of this community who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender. All services are provided with full confidentiality for clients. The Northern Virginia service region includes the cities of Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria and Fairfax, and the counties of Prince William, Loudoun and Fairfax. The NOVA facility is accessible for the disabled. WWC/NOVA provides the following services: access, medical services, body work, case management, housing counseling, mental health, healing garden, education and prevention, legal services and services in other languages.

Dominion Hospital has operated continuously as a psychiatric facility for 30 years. Today, Dominion is a full service psychiatric hospital, caring for all ages. Dominion offers three treatment levels, impatient services, partial hospitalization and crisis stabilization. Impatient services offers constant nursing care for patients who have complex psychiatric and/or medical needs or who are a risk to themselves or others. Inpatient treatment usually lasts from one to a few days before the patient is ready to be discharged to a less intensive treatment level. Services include medical/nursing care, individual and group treatment, activities therapies, and often medication therapies. Child and adolescent patients also receive educational services. Partial hospitalization, for patients requiring a highly structured environment, come to Dominion each morning and return home each night, up to seven days a week. This often serves as a transition between inpatient and outpatient services. Crisis stabilization is for patients in severe psychiatric stress in need of a controlled environment. Patients are referred to lesser care within hours.

Inova Urgent Care Centers provide care for a variety of nonemergency illnesses and injuries. The centers can provide supplemental care for those times when your physician's office is closed or unable to provide an immediate appointment. Patients do not need an appointment at Inova Urgent Care Centers. Patients are seen as quickly as possible on a walk-in basis. Onsite services include treatment for minor illness and injury, laboratory tests and x-rays, work-related injury, physical exams, audiometry and vision screening and alcohol and drug testing. Inova Urgent Care Centers are staffed by board-certified, board eligible licensed physicians. A physician, nurse, radiologic technologists and laboratory technician are always on duty at each center.

Inova Emergency Care Centers are open 24-hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. The centers are equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and testing equipment, treatment facilities and laboratory services. No appointment is necessary. Physicians, nurses and laboratory and X-ray technicians are emergency room trained, board certified/board eligible. Inova Health System specialists are on call. Facilities are JCAHO accredited and CAP certified. Inova Emergency Care Centers are equipped to treat chest pain, burns, lacerations, sprains and broken bones, acute abdominal pain, work related injury or trauma, acute asthma, severe allergic reactions and rashes, insect bites and bee stings. Fairfax County Health Department offers a wide variety of mental health services at its six area facilities.
Mental Health Crisis Intervention and Assessment Services include emergency service, mobile crisis unit and entry and referral services. Emergency services is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for those in crisis or experiencing a mental health emergency. It offers crisis intervention and stabilization and evaluations for referrals to other centers and programs. Mobile Crisis Unit responds to requests from Police, Fire and Rescue, and other agencies to provide on-site intervention, screening and referrals to hospitals and crisis care facilities. Entry & Referral Services are the initial contact point for mental health assessments and resources, where information and referral to appropriate services are provided.
Mental Health Outpatient Services provides assessment and treatment for children and adults who are not in need of emergency intervention. The services for adults include individual, couples, family and group therapy, medication management and targeted outreach/support programs for persons with mental illness. The services for children and youth include individual, family, group therapy, play therapy, child guidance, parenting skills, and medication management.
Mental Health Inpatient Services run an inpatient program at the Mount Vernon Hospital's Psychiatric Unit provides acute/intensive services through short-term inpatient care and rapid return to community living for acutely and severely ill individuals.
The Mental Health Community Support Programs provide a range of integrated treatment, case management, medications services, hospital discharge planning, outreach and family education and support to adults with serious and persistent mental illness and have a history of psychiatric hospitalizations. Many of these consumers present co-occurring alcohol and drug abuse, mental retardation, or neurological impairments.
Specialized Programs are offered to persons with additional special needs; such as those who are deaf or hard of hearing, have brain injury or HIV, persons with coexisting alcohol, drug, or mental retardation concerns, or home-bound elderly. Multi-cultural services for individuals are also offered.
The facilities also offer a range of day programs. The Adolescent Comprehensive Day Treatment program for emotionally disturbed children runs weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for nine month period. The Adult Comprehensive Day Treatment program is for adults in need of intensive treatment. The Psychosocial Rehabilitation program serves as a transitional program, helping its participants to go back into the community through interpersonal skills training. Vocational Services provides employment options for consumers who cannot, without assistance, readily integrate into the workplace.
Youth and Adult Residential Services are in place for those in need of 24-hour care. Patients in these programs live in various group homes for a nine to 12 month period and are provided with stabilization and crisis intervention programs. Transitional apartment programs are available following the nine to 12 month period of time, providing supportive housing for patients. The Adult Partial Hospitalization program is also available, with patients spending the day at a center and returning home in the evenings.
Domestic violence programs and services are also available. The Domestic Abuse program runs ADAPT (Anger and Domestic Abuse Prevention and Treatment), providing an anger management treatment program. Victims Assistance Network (VAN) runs a women's shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence. Both programs run a 24-hour helpline. A Men's Program provides assistance in finding alternatives to violence through verbal resolution of conflicts and constructive (non-violent) expression of feelings. The Grief Crisis Program provides services to individuals experiencing a tragic loss of a significant person in their lives. LINCS (Linking Infant Need with Community Services) provides intensive in-home services, parent counseling and education and assessment to families with children under age 6 who are at-risk of being abused or neglected.
Homeless services runs shelters at the Reston, Mount Vernon and Woodburn locations. Mental health and intervention programs are provided, as well as outreach into the community.
Courses in parenting skills, trust management and sign language are available. These courses are run out of the Mount Vernon center.
