The lawn of Woodbine Healthcare Center was transformed into a gourmet eatery last Saturday. Nine local restaurants lent their hand to “A Taste of Old Town,” a benefit for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Alan Dubow, director of community affairs for Woodbine, came up with the idea for the event. He is also on the steering committee for the Alzheimer’s Association and thought this would be a good way to kick off the beginning of the recruiting season for the annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, which is held in October.
About 250 people purchased $1 tickets to sample Indian chicken, crab cakes, carnitas, samosas, schnitzel, flank steak with peppers, kabobs and egg rolls. For the sweet tooth, there were fresh lemonade, croissants and a large assortment of homemade cakes from Hollin Hall Pastry Shop. Woodbine Catering, which served barbecue, crab cakes, coleslaw and lemonade, collected the most tickets, earning it the title of “Alexandria’s Favorite Restaurant.”
Dubow said that they raised over $2,000 and that this is designated to become an annual event.
