Parents will get the opportunity to voice their opinions on a set of proposed boundary changes for the southwest county middle school, Rocky Run and Stone middle schools; Frost and Lanier middle schools and Fairfax and Woodson high schools; and the gifted and talented centers at Keene Mill, Sangster and White Oaks at a public hearing Feb. 4, beginning 7 p.m., at Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road in Falls Church.
<mh>Southwest County Middle School
<bt>In order to create an attendance area for the new southwest county middle school, Fairfax County Public Schools staff is proposing to reassign the Stone Middle, located in Centreville, students in the areas south of Routes 66 and 29, including Lee Overlook, The Meadows, Newgate, Centre Ridge, Old Mill, Willoughby Woods, Clifton Townes, Confederate Ridge, Hanna Estates, Crofton Commons and Trinity Centre, but excluding Gate Post Estates to the new school.
In addition, Rocky Run, located in Chantilly, students from the attendance area south of Route 66, including Green Trails, Compton Village, Compton Heights, Compton Valley North Hart Run, Heritage Estates, Singleton's Grove, Sunset Ridge, Centreville Green, Little Rocky Run, Sequioa Lea, Cavalier Woods, The Ponds at Centreville, Bent Tree Apartments, Willoughby Woods, Walney Glen, Walney Mills, Centreville Farms, Edglea, Balmoral west of Johnny Moore Creek, Evening Hills and Clifton Crest will also be reassigned to the new school.
Gary Chevalier, coordinator of facilities planning, said the change would effect next year's seventh and eighth graders.
<mh>Lanier Middle and Woodson High
<bt>Students now attending Lanier Middle in Fairfax and Fairfax High in the areas of Popes Head Estates, Colchester Heights, Robey's Meadow, Quiet Brook, Decour Estates, Colchester Meadow, West Ridge Estates, Beech Ridge Estates, The Ridges of Glendilough, Popes Head View, Brecon Ridge Woods, Brecon Ridge, West Hill, North Hill, Braddock Forest, Braddox and Chilton Woods will be reassigned to Frost Middle and Woodson High schools, both in Fairfax.
The changes will be phased in by grade with the assignment to Frost Middle mandatory for seventh graders in September.
<mh>New GT Center
<bt>The school system will be opening a new gifted and talented center at Sangster Elementary School in Springfield to reduce overcrowding at the centers at Keene Mill in Springfield and White Oaks in Burke.
Students from Orange Hunt and Hunt Valley elementary schools, both in Springfield, now attending the Keene Mill GT Center will be reassigned to Sangster, which will open in September. The changes will be phased in by grade with the third grade slated to begin in the 2002-2003 school year.
The School Board is expected to take action on the proposed changes Feb. 24.
