The classic red barn which stood next to this silo on River Road burned to the ground in 1970.
But the silo, built in 1947 or thereabouts, withstood the paving and widening of River Road in 1948, and intense heat of 1970 fire. This white silo, once storing critical food for the dairy herd on Merry Go Round Farm had all but disappeared into the hedgerow. It emerged as Maryland State Highway required some clearing for an acceleration lane at the new intersection of River Road and Drew Lane.
While Merry Go Round has only a few lots left for houses, and the Holsteins have given way to horses, the silo remains a landmark, recently restored by Tyler and Bess Abell, owners of Merry Go Round Farm.
