A 70-year-old man suffered serious injuries in an automobile accident that occurred in Mount Vernon on Aug. 21.
The accident happened at the intersection of Fort Hunt Road and Waynewood Boulevard, according to the Fairfax County police.
The man, who was not identified by police, struck a telephone pole, which led to the road’s being closed while police and rescue personnel waited for Virginia Dominion Power to assist with power lines. There was only one car involved in the accident.
The Rev. Thomas Johnson, pastor at Plymouth Haven Baptist Church, was in his secretary’s office looking out the window when he saw the pole collapse.
“I wasn’t sure at first why it collapsed but then quickly realized what happened,” said Johnson. “I had the secretary immediately call 911, and we went out to see if we could help.”
Johnson said that it seemed like the emergency crew arrived very quickly but believes that they had to wait for the power company before getting the victim out of the car.
“He appeared to be unconscious at first but came to very quickly,” said Johnson.
The victim was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital. His condition is not being released by the hospital. There was no report on the cause of the accident.
