Literacy Council Moves

<bt>The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, a nonprofit organization that teaches adults basic reading, writing and English-speaking skills, is will temporarily be located at 3431-A Carlin Springs Road in Falls Church, while its usual home, James Lee School, is undergoing renovations over the next 15 months. The center will open at its new location Sept. 3, and all programs will continue as usual. <sh>ACE Students Win Competition

<bt>Four apprentices in Fairfax County Public Schools adult and community education (ACE) plumbing and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) programs have won awards in a statewide competition.

The winners are Brian Boysen, first place, HVAC; William Dean, second place, HVAC; Aaron Berry, third place, HVAC; and Russell Crawford, second place, plumbing. Boysen will advance to the national-level competition in October representing Virginia.

The annual event consists of a hands-on competition in which contestants must repair and put together an HVAC or plumbing mechanism to certain specifications. Competitors are evaluated on the quality of their work and the time they take to complete the task.

<sh>Volunteers Wanted

<bt>The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is looking for volunteers to become tutors to the more than 150 adult students on their waiting list. The Council is holding a Volunteer Orientation Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 7:30-8:30 p.m., at 3431-A Carlin Springs Road in Falls Church. <sh>Live Discussion with Domenech

<bt>Fairfax County Public Schools superintendent Daniel Domenech will host a discussion on washingtonpost.com's “Live Online,” Friday, Sept. 6, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. The superintendent will be available to discuss issues concerning the school system, renovations and construction projects and the budget. Questions may be submitted in advance to www.washingtonpost.com.

<sh>Service in Our Schools

<bt>Volunteer Fairfax is teaming with Fairfax County Public Schools, Oct. 26, for VolunteerFest 2002, a community-wide day of service.

This year's theme, "Service in our Schools," focuses on the needs of local schools and will provide an opportunity for citizen involvement, community education and awareness, and hands-on service projects at school facilities, including cleaning, landscaping, mulching and tutoring.

Businesses, families, individuals, civic organizations, Scout troops, faith communities and school groups are invited to participate. For more information or to register, call Volunteer Fairfax at 703-246-3460 or visit the Web at www.volunteerfairfax.org.

<sh>School Boundary Locator

<bt>Fairfax County Public Schools now has a Web-based school boundary locator. It can also be accessed through a voice-activated phone system.

Users type in the house number and street to get information about the elementary, middle and high schools in their boundary area, including the schools' full address and phone number.

To access the locator on the Web, go to http://www.fcps.edu/boundary. To access the service by phone, call 703-329-9831 and follow the instructions.

For other questions regarding boundaries, call 703-246-2111 between 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Information about how to determine school assignments and any potential boundary changes under consideration is available on the Web at http://www.fcps.edu/DFaS/bndry.htm.
