FCPS Staff Volunteers for PASS

<bt>The principals along with two teachers each from seven Fairfax County Public Schools have volunteered to be part of the three-person external assistance teams in support of Gov. Mark Warner's (D) PASS (Partnership for Achieving Successful Schools) initiative, which is designed to boost Standards of Learning performance in the lowest academically performing schools, during the 2002-03 school year.

The Fairfax County volunteers are coming from the following schools: Bailey's Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences in Falls Church, Belvedere Elementary in Falls Church, Garfield Elementary in Springfield, Groveton Elementary in Mount Vernon, Timber Lane Elementary in Falls Church, Woodley Hills Elementary in Mount Vernon and Mount Vernon High.

The volunteers will work with teachers and administrators in other schools in Virginia to help them meet the state standards. The volunteer schools are either fully accredited or have accreditation of "meets state standards," and each school has a pass rate of at least 70 percent in either English or mathematics.

FCPS' Bryant Alternative High School in Alexandria has been identified under the PASS initiative as one of more than 100 of the state's "accredited with warning" schools and will receive a visit from one of the assistance teams. The county did not have any schools identified as one of the 34 priority schools, which will require more in-depth help from the teams.
