City Schools Gear Up For New Year

Check the calendar. School is just around the corner and parents and students alike, are preparing for another academic year.

There are 13 elementary schools in the Alexandria City Public School system. School begins on Sept. 3<bt>get their children registered now.

THE SCHOOLS

John Adams Elementary is located at 5651 Rayburn Ave. Alexandria, VA 22311; 703-824-6970

* There are 609 students enrolled in this school.

* There are two administrators, 81 teachers, 67 percent of who have post-graduate degrees.

* Gail Smith is the principal.

* John Adams features programs for children who have been diagnosed as autistic, children who have learning disabilities and programs for mildly and moderately retarded students.

* Citywide transportation offered for Spanish-English dual language program.

* Renewal of the school opera The school is fully accredited.

* Students at John Adams attend Francis C. Hammond Middle School, the Minnie Howard Ninth Grade Center and T. C. Williams High School.

Charles Barrett Elementary is located at 1115 Martha Custis Dr. Alexandria, VA 22302; 703-824-6960

* There are 253 students enrolled at the school.

* There are 28 teachers, 54 percent with postgraduate degrees.

* Annetta Lawson is the principal.

* The school is fully accredited.

* Alexandria Tutoring Consortium program.

* Renovations: $200,000 including new classroom furniture, paint, carpet and tile, cabinetry.

* Expansion of character education program.

* After-school technology enrichment program for students and parents.

* Renovations: $300,000 including new classroom furniture, paint, carpet, cabinetry, and white boards.

* There are 53 teachers, 72 percent with postgraduate degrees.

* The principal is Marcia Baldanza.

* The school is fully accredited.

* Special programs at the school include: Computerized integrated learning system, Pullout program for talented and gifted students in grades 2-3, Outdoor classroom that teams senior citizens with students in learning.

* Renovations: $1.5 million including HVAC replacement, electrical upgrade, new cabinetry and sinks, carpet, and lighting replacement. * Students at Patrick Henry attend Francis C. Hammond Middle School, the Minnie Howard Ninth Grade Center and T. C. Williams High School.

* The new principal for 2002-03 is Glenda Washington.

* Special programs include: Expansion of literacy initiatives including young authors conference and accelerated reader program.

* Renovations: $375,000 including new carpet, paint, tile, playground and classroom furniture.

* Students at Jefferson-Houston attend George Washington Middle School, the Minnie Howard Ninth Grade Center and T. C. Williams High School.

* The new principal for the 2002-03 school year is Nancy Sparks.

* The school is fully accredited.

* Programs include: Expansion of volunteer programs.

* Renovations: $70,000 for a HVAC replacement in gym.

* Special programs include: Expand science lab into a math/science lab, Spanish-English dual language program for K-2.

* Renovations: $410,000 for a new roof.

* Mt. Vernon students attend George Washington Middle School, the Minnie Howard Ninth Grade Center and T. C. Williams High School.
