Standoff Ends With Suicide
After 10 hours of off-and-on negotiations with police, a Crystal City man barricaded inside his apartment shot himself.
Police were called to the man’s apartment at 1300 S. Crystal Drive at 10:40 a.m. last Wednesday, to check on his well-being, after receiving a report that he might pose a threat to himself.
Police found that he had barricaded himself, alone, inside his apartment. When the man told officers he had explosives, they called in the police department’s Crisis Negotiation Unit.
Negotiators with the CNU tried to talk to the man throughout the day, but were unable to maintain communications with him.
At about 8:15 p.m., police forced their way into the apartment. As they searched for the man, he shot himself, once, in the head. Fire Department EMTs treated him on the scene, and took him to George Washington University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said they fired no shots during the incident.
