On April 20, parents are invited to bring their children to a Child Safety Event at Sunset Hills Montessori Children's House 1980 Isaac Newton Square, Reston. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the school will be offering child ID and fingerprinting, and arts and crafts, as well as child safety seat demonstrations. The Fire and Sheriff's Departments will also present safety demonstrations. Call 703-481-8484 for directions.

Art, music, poetry and delicious food. What more could anyone want in life? All of the above will be provided by Langston Hughes Middle School students at an April 18 reception at the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Artwork created by seventh and eighth graders in classes taught by Chris Klinke and Norma Farbes will be on display. A small orchestral ensemble led by music instructor Irene Kohut-Ilchyshyn will provide the musical background for this elegant evening. Poetry readers will be chosen from a seventh grade English class at Hughes. Selections will be read which reflect and celebrate Reston's diversity, including poetry by Langston Hughes in honor of his 100th birthday. Light refreshments will be provided by Family and Consumer Sciences students led by their teacher, Cynthia Yobs, and by the PTA. Student artwork will be on display at U.S. Geological Survey from April 9 through April 30.

Ambleside Christian School is hosting an open house for prospective families on Wednesday, April 10 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Applications are being accepted for grades K - 7 for the 2002-2003 school year. Ambleside is located at Oakbrook Church, 1700 Reston Parkway. For information please call 703-435-3300.

A sixth-grade team from Fox Mill Elementary captured the Ranatra Fusca award at the Northern Virginia West Odyssey of the Mind competition that took place in March. Given at the judges' discretion, the award is presented to a team that exhibits exceptional creativity through problem solving, behavior or an extraordinary idea. The award acknowledges and encourages creative thinking and risk taking and was given to the Fox Mill team for a skit they created in response to the ostrich factor problem.

The Environmental Quality Advisory Council of Fairfax County is seeking applications from high school students who are interested in serving on the council as the student member from July 2002 through July 2003. As a member the student will get the opportunity to be involved in the process of making decisions and recommendations that impact the environment in the county. Those interested in serving on the committee can call 703-324-1210 before May 1.
