George Mason University's Board of Visitors has voted to raise tuition and fees by 16 percent for the 2002-2003 semester. The unanimous decision by the institution's governing body was made in response to an anticipated $14.7 million cut in state funds.
James Erich Carter of Herndon has received a President's Scholarship from Cedarville University and Katherine Mary Dykhoff of Herndon has received a Faculty Scholarship from the same university. Cedarville University awards President's Scholarship to first-year students who have an ACT score of 30 or better or a SAT score of 1310 or better, and a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Faculty Scholarships are awarded to first-year students who have a high ACT/SAT score and a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
The Council for the Arts of Herndon is offering scholarships again this year to students pursuing a career in the Arts. The scholarships are available to students ages 13 through 21 who reside in Herndon, attend a school there or are members in good standing of The Council for the Arts of Herndon. The scholarships are to help with expenses for college, summer programs or classes. Applications are available at the office of The Council for the Arts of Herndon, located in the old Town Hall building, 730 Elden Street or by calling 703-689-9535. Deadline for applications is Friday, April 19. Awards will be announced by May 17.
The Environmental Quality Advisory Council of Fairfax County is seeking applications from high school students who are interested in serving on the council as the student member from July 2002 through July 2003. As a member the student will get the opportunity to be involved in the process of making decisions and recommendations that impact the environment in the county. Those interested in serving on the committee can call 703-324-1210 before May 1.
After Prom is a fun, safe, alcohol-free event attended by many high school juniors and seniors. Activities, prizes, and food are provided. The After Prom event runs from the evening of May 18 to the morning of May 19, 2002, at the YMCA. The major fund-raiser for Herndon High School is the selling of Grocery Certificates. Giant, Shoppers Food Warehouse, and Food Lion are participating. Support students by purchasing these certificates from Joni Ogden at 703-471-4274 or e-mail her at JOgden6040@aol.com with the subject "SCRIP."
Herndon Optimist Club is accepting applications for its annual scholarship program. Scholarships of up to $1000 can be used for most kinds of education. The scholarship program is open to individuals up to 24 years old who meet one or more of the following requirements:
Individuals must be or have graduated from Herndon High School.
Applicants would normally attend (or would have attended) Herndon High School, but who attend/attended either a private or other public schools because of special educational requirements.
Individuals have participated in Herndon Optimist Club sponsored programs (sports, oratorical or essay contest etc.).
Additional criteria to be considered include: financial need, involvement in extracurricular and/or community activities, academic performance and recommendations or references. For information, call 703-435-1387 by April 20.

Herndon High School and The Dulles Hyatt Hotel will be hosting the first annual Herndon High School Job Fair on Thursday, April 18 from 2:20 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Local businesses representing banking, child-care, construction, high tech, hospitality, and retail companies and representatives of the county government, the military, recreational organizations, and temp agencies will be on hand to interview students about employment opportunities. The Dulles Hyatt management staff and the school staff will also be hosting a resume writing workshop on April 15 in room 217. Employers interested in participating in the job fair need to call Linda Boyke at 703-810-2310 no later than April 8.
