The fifth annual Potomac Falls High School College Forum will take place in the school's theater April 16 at 7 p.m. The speakers and topics are as follows:

Registration forms for the LCPS Summer in the Arts program will be available at school offices and art, music and drama departments throughout the school system. These programs are available to students currently in grades five through 12.

Summer in the Arts will run from Monday, June 24, through Friday, July 12. Workshops in the performing, literary and visual arts will take place at Harper Park Middle School with the exception of programs for current fifth-graders, a new feature this year.

Workshops for current fifth-graders in drawing, painting, sculpture, band, stringed instruments and chorus will take place at John W. Tolbert Jr. Elementary School.

Transportation to Summer in the Arts will be provided by LCPS.

The cost for the Summer in the Arts is $200 per student with $100 due at registration. A family discount of $50 is available--check the registration form for details. Registration for Summer in the Arts ends June 1 and space is limited.

For the first time, LCPS is offering tuition reductions. Those wishing to apply for them should do so a soon as possible.

Another new feature this year is the splitting of some workshops into advanced and beginner sections. New workshops being offered this year include band, calligraphy, choir, creative writing, journalism, mural painting, music theory and world music drumming.

Other courses being offered include ceramics, class voice, class piano, computer graphic arts, culinary arts, dance, drama, drawing, guitar, jazz band, music theater, photography, sculpture, show choir, video production and watercolor painting.

J. Lupton Simpson Middle School has initiated a new program called STAMP. The program takes place twice a week after school and will give each student the opportunity to get more individual help. The program will offer help with homework and studying before tests. Call 703-771-6640

High School seniors in Northern Virginia interested in pursuing college degrees in education and careers in teaching can apply for a new scholarship: Sallie Mae/Brandon Teacher Scholarship. Four scholarships for $1,000 each will be awarded. Eligible candidates must live in the 11th congressional district, and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Franklin Park is seeking experienced part-time instructors for spring and summer pre-school, elementary, intermediate, and high school children in the following categories: nature/outdoor activities, arts, crafts, horticulture/gardening, water gardens, softball, soccer, cheerleading, volleyball, fishing, in-line hockey, kayaking, roller-blading and camping. Loudoun Volunteer Services is offering a $500 scholarship at each of the county's six high schools to students who have performed volunteer service at their church, school or for their community. Applications are available at the school's guidance office. Deadline for application is April 5.

The Growing Stage's summer camp offerings for 2002, begins with Creative Drama Camps for rising kindergartners through third grade, two and three-week theater workshops for grades 3 through 9. Third and fourth graders can participate in "The Emperor's New Clothes," fifth and sixth graders will be performing a musical version of "Alice in Wonderland", and seventh through ninth graders are eligible for "Schoolhouse Rock Live!" The Advisory Board of the Middleburg Library, a branch of the Loudoun County Public Library, is accepting applications for two $400 scholarships. All 2002 high school graduates who will attend a post secondary school in the fall of 2002 and who reside in one of the following zip code areas: 20130, 20131, 20184, 20117, 20118, 20105, 20144, 20140, 20198, 20185 or 20107 are eligible to apply. The money will be used to purchase books at the students' new schools. In addition to the residency requirement, candidates must possess a current Loudoun County library card, complete an application (available at the Middleburg Library) and submit the application by midnight May 1. On March 21, the Loudoun Greens presented four $50 cash awards to High School Science Fair exhibitors at the Countywide Awards Ceremony held at Loudoun Valley High School. The greens joined the fair to encourage, recognize, and reward scholarly and in-depth research and exhibits by high school students using the 10 Key Values as criterion. The following students were honored: Cody John Pugsley, Bruce Tyler and John M. White from Loudoun Valley High School, and Matt K. Diniega from Potomac High School.

Parents can register children who will be starting kindergarten and first grade in the 2002-03 school year on Tuesday, April 16, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Parents may go to the school in their attendance area to register any child who will be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2002. Students who will attend Forest Grove Elementary in Sterling will register at Sully, Sterling, Guilford, or Rolling Ridge Elementary schools, and students who will attend Hutchison Farm Elementary in South Riding will register at Little River Elementary School.
