The plaque just mounted on the Old Presbyterian Meeting House building in Old Town Alexandria at 321 S. Fairfax Street strives to give a more complete record of the building of the historical church, including the work of enslaved people. The meeting house was originally built in 1775 in the Early Republic style, but was largely destroyed by fire in 1835. It was rebuilt in 1836. A bell tower was added in 1843 and granite entrance stairs were installed in 1853. (Wikipedia)
New plaque: “With gratitude and repentance, we honor the enslaved people whose skills and labors were unjustly used to help build the Old Presbyterian Meeting House sanctuary, flounder house and Elliot house,”
