More than 4,000 participants, many from around the world, took part in the George Washington Birthday parade Feb. 20 as the event celebrated the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial.
George Seghers, Executive Director of the Memorial, served as Grand Marshal of the parade that welcomed Freemasons from continents across the globe and every state in the nation to mark the anniversary and recreate the parade along King Street in Alexandria from 100 years ago.

“It was so delightful to see all of the different community groups and Masonic Lodges come together,” said parade co-chair Sue Johnson. “We were fortunate to have good weather and everyone was having such a good time.”
The parade, which is funded through private donations, was sponsored by the George Washington National Masonic Memorial Association as Jubilee Sponsor and the recently formed George Washington Legacy Foundation as Platinum Sponsor.
“We formed the foundation to enlighten public awareness of George Washington and his legacy,” said foundation president and Gold Sponsor Marion Moon. “We also provide grants to qualifying tax-exempt nonprofit organizations and governmental entities for the support of activities such as the parade.”
