High Rate of Evictions on the Route 1 Corridor

Meeting Wednesday, Nov. 13.

The Richmond Highway community in Fairfax County has a disproportionate number of evictions, according to the Eviction Lab in Richmond, which has mapped the rate of evictions by census tracts throughout the state.

Dipti Pidikiti-Smith, Deputy Director of Advocacy, Legal Services of Northern Virginia, who defends evicted tenants in Fairfax Court, and David Levine, Director of Good Shepherd Housing, who tries to prevent evictions, will speak at the next meeting of the South County Task Force, 1-3 pm, Nov. 13, at the Hyland South County Center, 8350 Richmond Highway, RM 221AB

Whereas the state average eviction rate is about 5 percent, corridor rates are 6-10 percent. The Eviction Lab notes that the most likely predictors of evictions are being a minority and having children.

The speakers will address the impact of evictions, tenants’ rights, and alternatives to eviction.
