Vienna Police Highlights Jan 4 – Jan. 10

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna Police Department from Jan 4 – Jan. 10, 2019.

INCIDENTS

Fraud -- Anita’s Mexican Restaurant 521 Maple Avenue, East Between Dec. 12 at 9 a.m. and Dec.17 at 5 p.m. An employee reported that the restaurant was defrauded when someone passed a counterfeit check.

Found Property -- 600 Block Niblick Drive, SE Jan. 1, 12 p.m. A resident found a phone and credit cards on his front porch.

Juvenile Case -- Glyndon Park 300 Glyndon Street, NE Jan. 3, 12:14 a.m. Sgt. Ruddy found two juveniles trespassing in Glyndon Park after dark. One of the juveniles had consumed two beers. The officer transported the juveniles home and released them to their parents after verbally counseling them about underage drinking and trespassing in the park.

Animal Case – Quarantine -- 500 Block Druid Hill Road, NE Jan. 3, 8 a.m. A resident was bitten on her lip by their cat. The cat’s owner was advised of the 10-quarantine.

Trespassing -- 500 Block Kingsley Road, SW Jan. 3, 1:01 p.m. A resident found a man sleeping in his shed. The man had previously been trespassed from the residence. The man ran off before officers arrived. The resident was advised of the warrant process, should he wish to pursue charges.

Police Service -- Cherry Street, SW Jan. 4, 12:38 a.m. A resident reported his adult son left the house upset. The son then began sending disturbing texts to his friend. MPO Borja located the son and transported him to an area hospital for evaluation.

Suspicious Person -- Vienna Town Hall 127 Center Street, South Jan. 4, 11:10 a.m. Officers responded to an alarm in the Finance Department of Town Hall. An employee activated the alarm when a woman came looking for mail that she advised she had forwarded to Town Hall. The woman’s suspicious behavior made the employees feel uncomfortable. After speaking with the officers, the woman left the building.

Suspicious Event -- 200 Block McHenry Street, SE Jan. 4, 5:45 p.m. A citizen reported that someone was illegally dumping waste from an R.V. into the street gutter. An officer spoke to the man who advised he was fixing the plumbing in the kitchen of the R.V. and had dumped the contents from kitchen drain into the gutter, mixing the contents with bleach. The officer contacted the Fairfax County Fire Marshal’s Office who advised the proper procedure for dumping such contents would be to empty the contents into a bag and place it in the garbage. The man was advised to follow that procedure.

Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated -- 100 Block Maple Avenue, East Jan. 5, 12:10 a.m. MPO Smith observed a driver commit a traffic offense and initiated a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the driver, the officer detected signs of impairment. After failing a series of sobriety tests, the driver was arrested. MPO Smith transported the 24-year-old woman from Christie Jane Lane in Fairfax to the Vienna Police Station where she was provided the opportunity to provide a sample of her breath for analysis. The woman was then transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where she was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.

Suspicious Event -- 500 Block Plum Street, SW Jan. 6, 12:44 a.m. Officers searched the area after receiving a report of a suspicious noise. Nothing unusual was found, and no other complaints were received.

Petit Larceny -- Starbucks 207 Maple Avenue, East Jan. 4, 8:30 p.m. A resident left his bicycle parked, locked, outside of Starbucks. When he returned, the bicycle was missing.

Trespassing -- Southside Park 1317 Ross Drive, SW Jan. 5, 5:45 p.m. Officers located two adult men and a juvenile in the park pavilion smoking hookah. The three individuals were advised they were not permitted in the park after dark and they agreed to leave the area.

Arrest – Simple Assault and Drunk In Public -- Westwood Country Club 800 Maple Avenue, East Jan. ,10:20 p.m. A citizen reported that his 15-year-old daughter was attending a party when she was touched inappropriately by a man. Officers located that man, and upon their interaction with him detected signs of impairment. The man would not follow the officers’ directions and became belligerent with them when he was placed under arrest. Ofc. Colligan transported the 21-year-old man from Crater Lane in Stafford, Va to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Simple Assault and Drunk In Public.

Arrest – Noise Violation -- The Bey Lounge 303 Mill Street, NE Jan. 6, 12:30 a.m. A resident made a complaint of loud music in the area. MPO Shaw responded and determined the music was coming from The Bey Lounge. MPO Shaw issued a summons to an employee, a 33-year-old man from Dry River Court in Reston for Maintaining Excessive Noise.

Found Property -- Branch Road and Valley Drive, SE Jan. 7, 3:58 p.m. A bicycle was left abandoned in the area of the bike trail near Branch Road and Valley Drive, SE.

Trespassing -- McDonalds Restaurant 544 Maple Avenue, West Jan. 8, 3:55 a.m. An employee advised a man was in the restaurant attempting to incite a fight with her. Officers located the man in the restaurant. He was advised by the McDonald’s manager that he was trespassed from the restaurant and that he may be charged with trespass if he returns.

Animal Case -- 700 Block Nutley Street, SW Jan. 9, 6:03 a.m. A resident found a sick raccoon in their backyard. An officer responded, found the animal in severe distress and euthanized the raccoon.

CRASHES

311 Maple Avenue, East -- Dec., 27 2:15 p.m. A driver left their vehicle legally parked in the parking lot. When they returned, they found damage where the vehicle had been struck. The other driver left the scene without providing their information.

143 Maple Avenue, East --Jan. 1, 2:18 p.m. A driver was attempting to back out of a parking space when she accelerated forward and struck a concrete wall, causing only minor damage to her license plate. The driver left the car in the parking lot and walked to Advanced Auto Parts at 311 Maple Avenue, East. While she was at Advanced Auto Parts, she began suffering chest pains. An employee notified EMS, and the woman was transported to an area hospital.

Nutley Street and Courthouse Road, SW -- Jan. 3, 2:08 p.m. Vehicle-2 was traveling westbound on Courthouse Road, entering the intersection of Nutley Street with the green traffic light. Vehicle-1 was traveling southbound on Nutley Street, approaching Courthouse Road. Driver-1 disregarded the red traffic signal and struck Vehicle-2 as he entered the intersection. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Obey a Traffic Signal.

300 Block Maple Avenue, East -- Jan. 3, 3 p.m. A driver left her vehicle legally parked in a parking lot. When she returned, she found damage to the rear of her vehicle. The other driver left the scene without providing their information.

200 Block Cedar Lane, SE -- Jan. 5, 6:50 p.m. Two vehicles were legally parked in the parking lot. Driver-1 was backing out of his space when he struck Vehicle-2, causing minor damage.

Maple Avenue and Courthouse Road, SW -- Jan. 8, 7:05 p.m. Two vehicles were traveling eastbound in the same lane of traffic on Maple Avenue approaching the intersection of Courthouse Road. Vehicle-2 stopped for the red traffic signal. Driver-1 ran into the rear of Vehicle-2. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

100 Block Park Street, NE -- Jan. 9, 1:06 p.m. Vehicle-1 was exiting a parking lot to turn left and go southbound on Park Street. Vehicle-2 was traveling southbound on Park Street when Vehicle-1 struck him as the driver entered the roadway. Driver-1 was issued a summons charging Failure to Yield Right of Way.
