Earlier this summer, Arlington County celebrated completion of its latest transportation capital improvement — a new bridge for North Carlin Springs Road over North George Mason Drive — ahead of time and under budget. After decades of wear and tear, the original bridge had developed significant structural issues that needed to be addressed. Building a new bridge addressed these safety issues, but also provided an opportunity to improve the function of the structure. Expanding the bridge width only four feet — from 65 to 69 feet — added enough room to widen sidewalks and add bike lanes while maintaining four travel lanes for vehicles.
