A Box Turtle in Alexandria

While technically not a "pet," we do have a somewhat special relationship with a turtle that came to our yard this year. We frequently get a box turtle or two into the yard of our Seminary Valley home that is by Holmes Run Park. We love turtles and even gave a turtle theme to our Little Free Library, naming it "The Reading Turtle." So I couldn't resist having my son Collin Marquis pose with the real box turtle next to the box turtle logo on our Little Free Library. After the photo, we put the turtle back in the yard and left.

Later that evening, we were surprised to discover that same box turtle from the morning making a nest in our yard and laying eggs. Over several hours she laid four eggs but by morning the nest was filled in and covered back over and the turtle had left. Box turtle eggs have an approximately 70-day gestation period so we'll be looking to have some box turtle hatchlings by mid August.
