Like the environmental and consumer groups featured in your recent story (“Environmental Groups Glad About Virginia Coal Ash Cleanup Law”), I applaud efforts to clean up local coal ash sites. Few things are more important than the purity of our water and air.
I hope these groups will also support the Governor’s efforts to replace coal with natural gas so that lawmakers don’t have to deal again with our coal ash issue. As the Centre for Policy Studies, based in the United Kingdom, explains, countries can reduce air pollution by developing and using shale gas so we can hasten the transition from coal to natural gas. The Centre advised “shale gas technology should be advanced as rapidly as possible and shared freely.”
