I just wanted to comment about Marti Moore’s article (“Candlelight Vigil for Florida Shooting Victims,” Connection, Feb. 21-22, 2018). I was actually in attendance at this event with my family. The picture stuck out to me the most because my brother and cousin are in it. (My cousin is the girl crying in the white jacket).
She is from Broward County, where the shooting took place. She lost one of her best friends that day. His name was Nick. He was 17. She was supposed to be visiting us in D.C for her birthday but there were absolutely no celebrations. She felt she needed to attend this vigil on her only night in town, so we all followed suit.
The community, that she is not even a part of, rallied around her as she spoke. They all came together to comfort the girl that had the most personal connection with this horrific event. It was crazy to me to see how all these different people from different walks of life came together to unite when they realized something was terribly wrong with country.
That night everyone had one thing in common. They all needed change. Everyone had enough of the ugly pattern of mass murder, mourn, repeat.
