Week in Fairfax: City of Fairfax Ranked as One of the Top Towns to Start a Small Business

The City of Fairfax is on a roll. Recently named by U.S. News & World Report as the sixth-healthiest city in the United States, it’s now making the grade for starting a small business. LendEDU (lendedu.com), an online marketplace for student lending, recently named the city as the 59th best in America for launching a new company—the organization ranked the top 500.

Criteria for the rankings included a population score (daytime population and population growth), an income score (disposable income and income growth) and an expenses score (property tax, sales tax, utilities cost, burglary and property crime). Each metric was ranked against its respective field and scored on its own point scale.

“Getting accolades like this certainly make sense given the terrific opportunities for small businesses in the city — especially tapping into our dynamic, well-educated and high-income population,” said Christopher Bruno, the economic development director for the City of Fairfax. “Add to this our location — in the center of Northern Virginia — along with our diversity, quality of life, sense of community, and having George Mason University literally in our backyard, and it’s a recipe for success for any new small business.”

Several other local jurisdictions also made the top 60, including Ashburn, Vienna, and Reston. For more information about doing business in the City of Fairfax, visit FairfaxVA.gov and search “Economic Development.”
