Del Cochran, who passed away on June 9, according to a Washington Post death notice, was instrumental in developing girls’ soccer in the Herndon community. Del served as Herndon Youth Soccer Girls Commissioner in the mid to late 1980s. He helped form all-star teams to compete in Father’s Day tournaments.
He then encouraged the all-star coaches to build travel teams to play in the Washington Area Girls Soccer (WAGS) League. While Herndon had fielded a girls’ travel team before, Del established a Herndon Youth Soccer travel program for girls that is thriving today. My daughter, Sandy, and many other girls have benefitted from Del’s efforts.
Rest in peace, Del!
