Opinion: Letter to the Editor: Vote in the Aug. 29 School Board Election

The May 31 resignation of Jeannette Hough, the Republican-endorsed School Board Member, will cost the county $250,000. Had she waited until June 10, a vote to replace her would have been included on the November ballot without cost to you, the taxpayer. Why would the party of “fiscal responsibility” encourage such timing? Could it be that special elections usually have low voter turnout and tend to favor Republicans?

Karen Keys-Gamarra is a fiscally responsible candidate who has the best interest of Fairfax County kids at heart. She has been endorsed by the Fairfax County Democratic Committee, the Fairfax Education Association and the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers. Let’s stop wasting taxpayers’ money and elect this fiscally responsible candidate.

As a Planning Commissioner on the Schools and Parks Committees and alternative member of the Personnel and Budget Committee, she has in-depth understanding of county budgets. In these positions Keys-Gamarra has sought input from a variety of stakeholders including staff, the Public Schools, transportation specialists, community associations, developers, and individual constituents. She helped determine comprehensive plans regarding zoning and other land use issues. Keys-Gamarra won’t waste your money.

As an attorney and court appointed child advocate with the school system, she stands up for children. In this role, Keys-Gamarra has become very familiar with Fairfax County schools, counselors, teachers, social workers, as well as parents and students. Her extensive history of leadership in the community also includes pro bono work as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (“CASA”) for children who are abused or neglected. She works to provide them with a safe and healthy environment.

For more information about Keys-Gamarra’s professional and volunteer experience with budgeting and matters pertaining to the welfare of kids, see her website: http://karen-keys-gamarra.ruck.us.

The Fairfax County School Board needs a candidate who cares about your money and your children. Please get out and vote for Karen Keys-Gamarra Aug. 29. You can do this three ways: (1) at your regular polling place, (2) in advance at the Fairfax County Government Center until Aug. 26, or by (3) absentee ballot.
