Herndon — Election night volunteer Jennifer Kyle Herd of Herndon pulls a precinct chief's kit to the check-in table while Office of Elections information technology technician Alexander Russell logs poll pads into inventory around 10:15 p.m. Nov. 8 at the loading dock of the Fairfax County Government Center as another chief pulls up in a car to unload. Herd is a parent of Boy Scout Troop 1530 of Pender United Methodist Church, which lent 25 scouts -- including her son Steven -- to help with the hard work of heavy lifting performed behind the scenes after the polls have closed.
