Alexandria Letter: Vote in Primary

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

There is an important election coming soon, on Tuesday, March 1, the primary election for President of the United States. I am supporting Hillary Clinton for President because I feel she is the best of all the candidates to be in charge in this extremely complicated world.

The following information benefits all candidates and outlines the important dates in Virginia for the 2016 Presidential elections and to emphasize the importance of taking the time to vote, in both the primary and general election. We are very proud of our daughter who voted in 2012, the first time she could vote. Elections are very important at all times, and especially now, given the stark differences in the candidates.

On Tuesday, March 1 the Virginia Democratic and Republican primary elections for President will be held at your respective precincts. Absentee voting began Friday, Jan. 15 and continues to Feb. 27, at the City’s Voter Registration Office, 132 North Royal St., Suite 100. Hours are Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voter registration deadline for this election is Monday, Feb. 8. You may submit a new or updated (change of address, etc.) voter registration application online through Virginia's Department of

Elections website (http://elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/in-person-voting/index.html).

If you would like to submit a paper registration application, you may use the form on the Voter Registration Information and Application page located at: www.alexandriava.gov/Elections.

Sample Ballots for the March 1 Primary are posted on that website. All persons qualified to vote may vote in either Primary, however, they may not vote in both Primaries (Virginia Code 24.2-530). For this election, voters who wish to participate in the Republican Party Primary must sign a statement confirming Republican Party affiliation before voting.

Primary voting determines who will be the Democratic and Republican candidates for President on Nov. 8, national election day.

Virginia voters must show photo identification prior to voting. For more information, including a list of acceptable IDs, please see Virginia's Department of Elections website (http://elections.virginia.gov/casting-a-ballot/in-person-voting/index.html).

If you do not have a photo ID, you may apply for a free photo ID at the City of Alexandria’s Voter Registration office any time it is open, including Election Day. They are located at 132 North Royal Street, Suite 100. Hours are Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This ID is valid for voting purposes only. On Election Day the office is open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Voting is a privilege, please exercise it.
