Herndon: Water Meters, Automated Splash

The Town of Herndon will replace existing residential water meters in the middle of March and upgrade to an automated meter reading (AMR) system.

The Town will be able to read meters from radio receivers in moving vehicles, according to Town spokesperson Anne Curtis, “and will enable the town to more efficiently track each home’s water usage, as well as monitor and assess community water demands.”

The new technology will eliminate the need for Town staff to go onto residential properties to read meters, will prevent reading and recording errors, will improve billing accuracy since automated meter readings will reflect actual water usage rather than estimated, and will allow Town staff to more rapidly detect excessive or unusual water usage that may need plumbing or system problems.

“The process to replace all existing town water meters with the new AMR system is expected to take approximately four months,” according to Curtis.

Residents will receive door-hanger notices approximately 24-48 hours prior to their scheduled replacements and do not need to be home when meters are replaced.

Work will not cost residents anything and will take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
