The Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club released a report last month entitled “The Top 25 Virginia Localities with the Highest Toxic Air Emissions.” Of the top 25, Arlington zip code 22203 ranks No. 24. Arlington was victim to more than 175 thousand pounds of toxic pollutants released into the air in 2014, the latest toxic release data made public by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The report is based on the EPA’s 2014 Toxic Release Inventory, a collection of air pollution data available for most ZIP codes across the United States. This data is analyzed to create the final Sierra Club report.
Arlington, a newcomer to the top 25, contains The Pentagon Reservation. The reservation released tens of thousands of pounds of chemical compounds listed in the report.
