Spring is in the air, and that means it’s time for City of Fairfax residents to start thinking about the 2016 Residential Appearance Awards. All single-family residential properties in the City are eligible.
Up to three winning properties are selected each spring by a panel of professional judges. Entries are judged according to the following criteria:
- Landscape Design Quality - Balance, seasonal interest; Appropriate for home and neighborhood;
- Residence and Building Quality - Craftsmanship, complementary to setting, materials;
- Maintenance of Landscape and Building(s) and
- Special Characteristics - Sense of place, unique, and “green” footprint.
The winning property owners will receive a $75 gift card from Twins Ace Hardware in Fairfax. They’ll also be given a mountable plaque identifying the property as a 2016 winner. Winning properties are identified on the City’s Website, and their owners will come before the City Council to be recognized and receive their prizes.
Nominations may be submitted via email or in hard copy on the nomination form. But they must be received by Friday, May 6, at 5 p.m. For more information about the awards program, or to obtain a nominating form, call the Department of Public Works/Heather Turley at 703-385-7995.
People may nominate their own or others’ properties. They do not need to know who the owner is, nor do they need permission to make the nomination. The City of Fairfax Community Appearance Committee is partnering with Twins Ace Hardware to sponsor this event. Last year, more than 30 entries were received.
The Community Appearance Committee is comprised of citizen volunteers appointed by the City Council. For more information about the committee, go to http://www.fairfaxva.gov/government/public-works/operations-division/community-appearance-committee.
