To the Editor:
My wife and I have lived in Olde Towne for 25 years, interrupted by a 2 and a half year assignment to Chicago. Since the earliest time we have lived in Alexandria we have known and admired “Van” Van Fleet, a candidate for a City Council seat in the Nov. 3 election. Van has been a close friend since we first met him in 1988. He has always been a vocal and effective public policy advocate. He continues to advocate for “respectful” development in our city. He combines the civic conscience for the poor and elderly as well as the more fortunate citizens who benefit so much from living and working in this truly special environment. Indeed, he can claim a great deal of responsibility for the ambiance that makes our city almost magically special. A prime example of the success of his efforts one need look no further than his stand against incompatible development on the waterfront.
Van has always stood for the retention of the historical ambiance of our city. That is why we, even though we are registered Democrats, stand proudly for the election of “Van” Van Fleet for the City Council.
