Discovery Deep of Great Falls Studies World’s Oceans and Waterways

Discovery Deep has announced its establishment as a nonprofit organization providing

research and support for historic and scientific projects dealing with the world’s oceans and

waterways. The organization, incorporated in Virginia and seeking tax-exempt status, is poised to send representatives to the Dive Equipment and Manufacturers Association’s (DEMA) Annual Show in Orlando, Fla. in November 2015.

“Discovery Deep began as a group of divers, initially on the East Coast, seeking to add to the world’s knowledge of our maritime history and to support scientific research or our oceans and waterways,” explained CEO Frank Stopa. “We are ‘citizen scientists’ contributing to a better world, one dive at a time.”

In under a year, Discovery Deep has conducted a 3-dimensional digital mapping project of the ‘Oldest Intact Warship in North America’ in Lake George, N.Y. and initiated the collection of environmental DNA samples in support of shark research at the University of Salford in Manchester, United Kingdom on both coasts. Future projects have already been launched including research of historic underwater sites and collaboration with other non-profit foundations seeking to preserve the world’s oceans.

The organization is centered on its Founders, Frank Stopa, Mohamed Hafez and Kevin Moore, dive buddies who came together a year ago to launch their first project. The three knit together a growing network of divers, supporters and sponsors, which includes team members and volunteers in Virginia, Maryland, New York, Maine, Florida, North Carolina, California and Ontario, Canada.
