FACETS began as a meal distribution outreach effort in 1988, today is an established nonprofit organization with programs to provide shelter, food, and medical attention for those unable to provide for themselves. Kurdish Human Rights Watch

KHRW began in 1989 with the mission to enable Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), refugees, asylee newcomers and homeless individuals to achieve self-sufficiency and economic independence through direct assistance and capacity-building. Volunteers and advocates can adopt a refugee or refugee family, sponsor a critically ill child from Iraq to receive medical care, promote women and democracy in Iraq, promote human rights in Iran, and donate to the scholarship fund for refugee youth. Affordable Housing Corporation (AHC)

AHC, a nonprofit developer of affordable housing, operates in Vienna to provide quality homes for low- and moderate-income families. AHC also offers services for residents and homeownership opportunities. www.ahcinc.org/index.html.

Northern Virginia Family Service

Committee for Helping Others (CHO)

CHO is a Vienna organization committed to providing simple, loving charity to those in need. CHO is currently seeking volunteer drivers for their furniture and transportation programs. Alternative House

Alternative House is a housing service with programs like Assisting Young Mothers and, in cooperation with Fairfax County Public Schools, the Homeless Youth Initiative, which provides safe transitional housing to homeless students. The Shepherd’s Center of Oakton-Vienna

SCOV is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to providing opportunities for adults (50-plus) to seek rewarding lives and to live independently in their homes for as long as possible. In 2012 SCOV provided services and programs to more than 3,000 older adults and was voted the Best Nonprofit of the Year by the Vienna Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce. Family PASS

Family PASS strives to step in before families lose their housing by providing rental subsidies, extensive case management and other assistance including education, job training, child care, food, transportation, health care, help with children’s issues and counseling. So Others Might Eat

SOME is a 40-plus-year-old Washington, D.C. based organization with church partnerships throughout Northern Virginia and a storage facility in Vienna. SOME works to meet the immediate daily needs of needy adults and children with food, clothing and health care, with the goal of breaking the cycle of homelessness by offering services such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment and counseling, to the poor, the elderly and individuals with mental illness. www.some.org/‎.

American Association of University Women (AAUW)

The Vienna Branch of AAUW represent a diverse cross-section of Vienna and Oakton area women working together to promote equity and education for women. AFCEA Educational Foundation

Rotary Club of Vienna

The Rotary Foundation, Vienna Chapter was founded in 1965, and during the past year, Vienna Rotary donated $168,000 to local schools, nonprofits and the Town of Vienna. The chapter works to support local efforts like festival ViVa! Optimist Club of Greater Vienna

The Optimist Club of Greater Vienna is an all volunteer, community service organization. Members donate their time, energy and funds to serve the youth of the greater Vienna community including students at James Madison High School, George Marshall High School, Oakton High School, all schools in their school pyramid, local Scout Troops, sports teams and youth groups. The Vienna Host Lions Club

The 42 members of the local chapter of the world’s largest service club do service projects in the spirit of their motto, “We Serve.” They collect eyeglasses and hearing aids and prepare them for those who need them, fundraise with “White Cane Days” to donate to 13 organizations which help the blind, and they sell Christmas trees and participate in holiday bazaars to raise funds for hearing, youth, welfare, and safety and civic organizations. Friends of Guest House

Offers structure, supervision, support and assistance to female ex-offenders who sincerely want to improve their lives and break the cycle of incarceration. Friends of Guest House offers the only program for women of its kind in Northern Virginia, and receives countless inquiries every year. Homestretch

Created in 1990, Homestretch is the largest provider of transitional housing in Fairfax County and offers a wide variety of services that are focused on helping the homeless better their lives through education. New Hope Housing

In 1978, it opened the first homeless shelter in Fairfax County. New Hope Housing is the oldest and largest provider of shelter to the homeless of Northern Virginia. Its mission is to provide both shelter and the tools to build a better life. Pathway Homes

Established in 1980, Pathways focuses on providing housing and support services to individuals with serious mental illnesses, with the mission to help these individuals reach their full potential and lead stable lives. Shelter House

Shelter House follows the Housing First model, with the main priority to re-house every family that begins one of their six unique housing programs. Formed in 1981, when several ecumenical groups came together to better serve Fairfax County's low-income population. Volunteers of America-Chesapeake

One of the nation's largest and most comprehensive human services organizations with a history covering over a century, VOAC operates the Baileys Crossroads Community Shelter, and provides assistance through medical care, counseling, education and training for people in poverty. McLean

The Friends of Clemyjontri

The Friends of Clemyjontri is an organization dedicated to raising funds for the purpose of maintaining and enhancing Clemyjontri Park in conjunction with the Fairfax County Park Authority. Clemyjontri is an all-inclusive park that offers state of the art play equipment that enables children of all levels of ability to play side-by-side. It also allows parents with mobility issues to enjoy the playground alongside their children. In 2010 the Friends of Clemyjontri raised funds to purchase and install the world’s only wheelchair accessible swing; the Liberty Swing. In 2011 they donated a musical drum circle of instruments and an audience bench, and in 2012 they raised funds for the purchase and installment of a shade pavilion for picnicking and special events. At the center of the park is a wheelchair accessible carousel that serves as the park’s centerpiece. The playground is open year round. Children's Trust Fund (CTFund)

CTFund is a completely youth-run organization dedicated to helping malnourished and impoverished children in developing countries achieve a healthy and happy start to life. McLean Community Foundation

McLean Rotary Club

Friends of Colvin Run Mill

Friends of Colvin Run Mill is dedicated to assisting the Fairfax County Park Authority in enhancing the Colvin Run Mill Historic Site and its educational programs. Friends of the Great Falls Library

Great Falls Ecumenical Council

The Great Falls Ecumenical Council has members from all the churches in Great Falls. The group supports Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, the Good Shepherd alliance housing for the homeless, Pedals for Progress in April, after-graduation parties for local high schools, Camp Fraser and a 5K walk/run and blood drive on July 4. It also sponsors blood drives throughout the year. The council hosts ecumenical worship services at Thanksgiving, on Good Friday, a sunrise service at Great Falls National Park on Easter Sunday and a January ecumenical service. 703-759-6068.

Great Falls Optimist Club

A group of men and women committed to programs that educate youth and help them expand their horizons and avoid pitfalls as they mature. The Optimists sponsor the "Just Say No" program and an oratorical contest as well as the Adeler Jewelers Children’s Festival. Great Falls Trailblazers

The Trailblazers support development and maintenance of trails, both stonedust and natural surface, in Great Falls. They monitor development to ensure compliance with the trails designated in Fairfax County’s Comprehensive Plan trails map and actively work to complete trails on Georgetown Pike and Walker Road. Great Falls Woman’s Club

This diverse group makes things happen in the community and looks to residents to join in. For the last two years, the club has raised thousands of dollars with a Casino Night Gala and fundraiser to support construction of a new fire station for professional and volunteer firefighters and paramedics in Great Falls. While they perform community service, raise money and award women’s scholarships, members of the Great Falls Woman’s Club have programs that foster camaraderie within the club. Friends and Newcomers of Great Falls

Newcomers of Great Falls helps new residents of Great Falls and its school district meet each other and assimilate into the community. The nonprofit organization offers more than 300 members a variety of activities and programs along with opportunities for leadership, community service and support to local charitable and civic organizations. The Turner Farm Team

A group of community volunteers who raise money and public support for a public park that was once a dairy farm at Georgetown Pike and Springvale Road. Sweet Virginia Foundation is Northern Virginia's charitable beekeeping cooperative whose mission is to promote urban/suburban beekeeping and provide educational and volunteer opportunities for adults and children. Assistance League of Northern Virginia

An all-volunteer organization that clothes, feeds, educates and nurtures those in need. Working through six elementary schools and Inova Fairfax Hospital, Assistance League touches the lives of some of the most needy in Northern Virginia. Council for the Arts of Herndon

The Council for the Arts of Herndon is the Town of Herndon’s officially designated local arts agency. Herndon-Reston FISH

Touching Heart

Touching Heart is an organization that encourages children to help others by creating a wishlist for a child in one of the orphanages or foster care center affiliated with the organization and asking friends and family to donate to the wish list. The children who receive the gift respond with a letter or sometimes a painting or handmade gift and the two learn about each other and the joy of sharing this way. The Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic

Shelter House

LINK: Link Against Hunger

LINK provides emergency food assistance by request on a daily basis and hosts Thanksgiving and Christmas programs. The organization is comprised of 14 member churches serving Herndon, Sterling and Ashburn. LINK needs contributions of food, coats and holiday toys for children, plus volunteers. Northern Virginia Technology Council

A not-for-profit that functions similarly to a chamber of commerce for tech companies, providing resources and networking opportunities for tech businesses; offices are in Herndon, Reston, Chantilly and Centreville. www.nvtc.org.

Herndon Village Network

The Herndon Village Network is dedicated to assisting Herndon area seniors age in place. Their focus at this time is on providing free transportation for Herndon seniors to medical appointments, social engagements, or shopping. This service will begin at the end of this year once the program is operational. Burke

Deeper Missions

An aid and mission travel organization that aims to implement sustainability projects, such as clean energy, safe water and sanitation in developing nations. Locally, volunteer opportunities include helping design graphics, social media management and fundraiser writing, in addition to being part of a travel team. http://deepermissions.org.

Lions Club

The Burke Lions, formed in 1967, hold two big annual fundraising events, including selling food at the Burke Centre Fall Festival and Christmas tree sales at Cardinal Forest Plaza, all proceeds of which benefit charities. The MOMS Offering Moms Support (MOMS) Club is an international, non-profit organization that provides support for mothers. Burke CARES

Burke CARES is a community-building, non-profit organization incorporated in 1997 and composed entirely of volunteers that serves the members of Burke Centre and the larger Burke community by helping community members with resources to come to the aid of community members who need those resources. Celebration Singers

Celebration Singers is a performance-oriented and service-based community singing group that endeavors, through its presence and visibility in Prince William County, to enhance the county’s image throughout Northern Virginia, and to provide members and audiences with a rewarding and enjoyable experience through seasonal concerts. GIVE

GIVE (Growth and Inspiration through Volunteering and Education) is a non-profit organization founded and operated by high school students, which works towards promoting leadership of youth through volunteering time for a free tutoring program for children. Last year, GIVE ran 11 centers in both libraries and community centers, and is looking forward to expanding further this year with more support. The GIVE center at Richard Byrd Library, which has served over 1,000 students, has over 100 students and 60 tutors that meet every Saturday from 1-3 p.m. www.giveyouth.org.

Friends of the Burke Centre Library

The library maintains an association of persons and organizations interested in supporting and advocating for public library services. Rotary Club of Burke

The Rotary Club of Burke offers the opportunity to participate with a group of diverse, ethical, business and professional people in activities designed to give back to the community. Fairfax City Area FISH (Friendly Immediate Sympathetic Help)

Working with the Office of Coordinated Services Planning and Fairfax County Department of Human Services, FISH helps local citizens who are in temporary need of life's basic necessities such as food, clothing and financial assistance for rent, mortgage payments, utilities and medical treatments. Comfort for America's Uniformed Services (CAUSE)

Food for Others

Our Daily Bread

Fairfax Families for Kids
