Sister Lucy Dei (right) of St. Augustine Catholic Church with the donated boxes of minerals.

As a member of several local mineral clubs, I visited a dear friend of mine who is a nun/director, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, in Washington, D.C. She introduced me to the other nuns on staff there and gave me a tour of the school. When we visited one of the science classrooms, I noticed that there was a mineral box that contained very few minerals. Excited by the thought of supplying the school with more minerals, I immediately told her that I would contact members of the NVMC and MSDC mineral clubs regarding mineral donations. The clubs responded enthusiastically, which resulted in the donations of 12 mineral boxes filled with all types of minerals and fossils. A large mineral chart and other supplies were also donated. The teacher, principal, and other nuns were delighted. I explained that education was one of the main purposes for our clubs’ activities. We are thrilled to have opportunities to encourage students and others as well in the field of science. It’s our hope that a spark will be lit, and that one day, some of the students will pursue studies in geology, mineralogy, chemistry and other earth sciences. The generosity of my club members and the interest they showed in responding to my request for donations really touched the heart of those at St. Augustine, and it meant a lot to this rockhound as well.
