Herndon — The Herndon Fire Station has a lot of history to it, and much of it will be lost forever as a new station is built over the next year. And while the original cornerstone from the station’s 1950 construction will remain with the new station, Capt. Kerwin McNamara says they are looking for plenty more.
"This is a town that’s proud of its history and takes pride in things like its Fire Station, and we’re looking to make sure the past is part of what we’re doing going forward," McNamara said. "Whether it’s photos, old pieces of equipment, trophies, ribbons, we’re interested in all of it."
McNamara says he’s surprised at the amount of people who have connections with the fire department, many going all the way back to when the force was all volunteer.
"We don’t want the new station to be sterile, it’s a place where firefighters live, and we want the history of the place to be a part of that," he said. "Obviously we’re not asking people to part with something that’s important to their family, but if it’s something sitting in an attic somewhere, we’d love to have it."
The collection will be incorporated into a display case or other area in the lobby of the new station. Residents can bring their items to the station, located at 680 Spring Street.
