Six Displaced in Townhouse Fire
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded on Jan. 12, at approximately 1:10 p.m., to a three-level townhouse fire at 706 Birch Court in Herndon.
The first firefighters on the scene reported a fire from the basement to the attic area, causing a second alarm to be requested. More than 60 emergency personnel responded to the scene. Firefighters brought the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes. Three adults were home when the fire started. An adult female was transported to Reston Hospital for treatment of minor burns and smoke inhalation. Three adults and three children were displaced and damage is estimated at $200,000. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family. The fire is under investigation.
Constituent Meeting
Del. Tom Rust (R-86) and Sen. Janet Howell (D-32) are scheduled to conduct a community meeting Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m., in the Town Council Chambers. The meeting is an opportunity for constituents to speak with Rust and Howell about what is important to them during this year's General Assembly session. The two will also discuss legislation they have proposed for this year. Council chambers are located at 765 Lynn Street in Herndon.
ADAMS Fund-raiser, Jan. 21
Sangla Hill Rebuilding Coalition, with support from the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, is having a fund-raising dinner, Saturday, Jan. 21, from 7-10 p.m. to help rebuild churches in Sangla Hill, Pakistan.
The keynote address will be given by Ambassador Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington, D.C. Other speakers include Rev. Clark Lobenstine, executive director of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington; Pastor Comfort Jacob of the Trinity Presbyterian Church; Manzur Ejaz, newspaper columnist and economist; and Imam Mohamed Magid, executive director of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society. Interfaith groups have been invited to help in the rebuild effort. The ADAMS Center is located at 46903 Sugarland Drive in Sterling.
Historical Society Meeting
The Historical Society of Herndon presents "Herndon: A Town in the Old Dominion, Words and Music Composed by David Rubenstein" on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m., in the Herndon Train Depot.
Rubenstein, a Herndon resident, has composed this original piece on Herndon and divided the narrative to reflect an aspect of Herndon history. Leaf Collection
Collection of bulk leaves by vacuum trucks will end on Friday, Jan. 27. After this date, all leaves must be bagged and placed as yard waste for collection. Bulk collection of leaves will resume in conjunction with Spring Clean-Up, April 3 through April 14.

Police Need Public's Help
Herndon Police are looking for witnesses to a felony hit and run accident that occurred Monday, Nov. 21, 2005 at approximately 7:29 p.m. A pedestrian was struck at the intersection of Station Street and Lynn Street in the Town of Herndon. The striking vehicle may have been a blue, compact passenger car, possibly a foreign make with minor damage to the right front end. Anyone that witnessed this accident or has further information is asked to contact Officer Stapleton at 703-435-6846.
* During the week of Dec. 24, 2005, a pet store in the Town of Herndon was burglarized and a puppy was stolen. The suspect or suspects may be keeping the dog as their own, or may attempt to sell the dog.
The dog, a female Chihuahua that is three months old, is cream and white. Residents with any information about the whereabouts of the dog, or possible suspects, please contact Detective Duranko at 703-435-2990 or by e-mail at lee.duranko@herndon-va.gov. Callers may remain anonymous.
Herndon police also remind, only buy a dog from reputable individuals and organizations. Prior to purchasing, a dog can be scanned for a microchip identification at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. The Promote Herndon committee — a task force comprised of volunteers committed to promoting the Town of Herndon as an ideal place to live, work and visit — recently released a restaurant map and directory. Featuring 112 restaurants located throughout the town's business and historical areas, the selected eateries range from casual and fine dining, to fast food and ethnic specialty. The directory will be distributed via local hotels, attractions, public facilities and human resource departments of local businesses.
