</b>Gala and Auction. The Northern Virginia Community Foundation announces its 2005 Gala and Silent Auction will take place at the McLean Hilton. The Northern Virginia Community Foundation is a nonprofit 501C3 community endowment established to meet a wide variety of social, educational, cultural and other charitable needs throughout Northern Virginia. Last year, the foundation distributed nearly $2 million through grants and scholarships to benefit the community. </b>Animal Blessing and Memorial. Washington Plaza Baptist Church, 1615 Washington Plaza, Reston, at 11 a.m. Join a celebration and blessing of current pets, as well as a memorial remembering those who have passed away. Please bring dogs on a six-foot leash, cats and other small animals in carriers. Please leave nervous or aggressive animals at home and bring a photo to be blessed instead. Kids in Music. Concert 11 a.m.-7 p.m. in the Reston Town Center Pavilion. Donations will be collected for the American Red Cross for hurricane relief. Ben and Jerry’s (coming soon to Reston Town Center) will be selling ice cream and donating the proceeds to the cause. Clyde’s of Reston and Paolo’s Ristorante will also be participating. Magic Show. Featuring the magic of Speed and Thro, served with a little comedy on the side. 8 p.m. at the Industrial Strength Theater. The show features many new effects including The Trapezoid, a modern and comedic version of the sword basket illusion. While fun for the family and suitable for all ages, this is considered strong magic – don’t expect a rabbit to pop out of a hat. Van Metre 5 mile Run. Begins at 8:30 a.m., at Broadlands in Ashburn. The Van Metre Companies host a post-race celebration for all participants including refreshments, awards and door prizes. Old Rag Mountain Hike. The Herndon Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a trip to Old Rag Mountain from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. A mountain in the Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, Old Rag Mountain is 3,291 ft. in elevation. The hike's level of difficulty is strenuous – 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult). Depart from the Herndon Community Center. RCC Trip. The Reston Community Center will explore the roots of American industry and contemporary art by taking a trip to the Hagley Museum and the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts in Wilmington, Del. The trip runs 7 a.m.-7:30 p.m. This tour is intended for people age 14 and older. Fee is $44 for people who live or work in Reston and $55 for all others. </b>Autumn Adventure at Reston Town Center. Noon until 4 p.m. Welcome the change of season with everything from live music to "Living Scarecrows". Celebrate autumn with hayrides, a hay maze, face painting, craft making and more. Children are invited to participate in a costume parade and contest at 1 p.m. Trick or treating will begin at 3:30 p.m. at participating Reston Town Center retailers. Admission price is $5 per child or $20 per family. Proceeds will benefit the programs of Reston Interfaith.

Welcome to Herndon. An opportunity for new residents to get acquainted with the community. The program includes an overview of town government and town services, as well as opportunities for getting involved in the community. Fall foliage train excursion. Enjoy the fall foliage with an authentic steam train ride through the mountains of western Maryland. Because of budget cuts, the railroad may be shutting down and this may be the last chance to go. The trip, 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., includes transportation by motor coach, group leader and train admission. No refunds after Oct. 1. Departs from the Herndon Community Center. Autumn Retreat. Reston Community Center’s Autumn Retreat at Lake Anne will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m., features a cornucopia of therapeutic activities designed to energize and inspire, including musical chi gong, yoga for energy, breathing exercises, body awareness, eating awareness, nutritional snack, deep relaxation, a lake walk, routines to take home. Fee is $25 for people who live or work in Reston and $35 for all others. This class is targeted to adults age 18 and older. Teen Mountain Boarding. Reston Community Center's Teen Department is hosting a day of mountain boarding at Bryce Mountain Resort, 6:45 a.m.-8 p.m. Participants will learn how to mountain board safely. Mountain boarding, which is a cross between snowboarding and skateboarding, is a new extreme sport that requires physical strength, agility and fitness. The trip fee, $40 for Reston residents and $60 for nonresidents covers lessons, board rental and safety equipment rental. Teens will be responsible for buying lunch and dinner on the way home.
