River Bend Middle School's sixth grade dean Tripp DiNocola was a teacher/administrator with the United States High School Diplomats program in Japan last July. Fifty-two high school students from the United States and Japan toured Japan for 20 days. They visited many cities, temples, shrines, hot springs, a Japanese high school, Hiroshima's Peace Park and Mount Fuji. DiNocola spent 10 days in Ibaraki teaching 26 Japanese students English and American culture. The Loudoun County Public School Web site was used and the students learned about River Bend.

Sully Elementary has received a $7,000 Wachovia Tutoring Partnership grant for the 2003-2004 school year. The continuation of the program at Sully is based on the school's final report on last year's program. The partnership requires participating schools to use the Book Buddies tutoring program, submit detailed interim and final reports. They must also show that the 15 students in the program have made academic improvement as measured by the PALS screening instrument.

Loudoun United Way and the Loudoun County Department of Social Services are sponsoring a school supply drive through the month of August. People are being encouraged to visit participating grocery stores or pharmacies and purchase a school supply for a child who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

Donate needed school supplies at local Giant, Safeway and Rite Aid stores. The Leesburg Pharmacy and Sonak Family Practice (in Sterling) are also partners and will be collecting donations.

Loudoun nonprofits, government agencies and elementary schools working with low-income families will distribute the supplies in time for school in August. Participating agencies include: YMCA-Big Friends, Northeast Coalition, LARC, Department of Mental Health, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Transitional Housing, Department of Social Services and several area elementary schools.

Look for a donation box or shopping cart with the School Supplies posters and flyers in participating stores and donate to a child in need.

Students need book bags, spiral notebooks, three-ring binders, number 2 pencils, loose leaf 3-ring paper, scissors (round end), rulers, crayons, composition books, pocket folders, Kleenex, plastic storage bags, liquid soap and lots of miscellaneous items.

Call the Department of Social Services at 703-771-5718 for more information.

The annual Loudoun County Public Schools College Fair will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28 at Stone Bridge High School. Representatives from more than 175 institutions will be present. Limited parking will be available at the school, with satellite parking at Sanders Corner Elementary, Hillside Elementary and Eagle Ridge Middle School. Shuttle buses will run every 15 minutes from these schools. Buses will also leave the other county high schools at 5:30 p.m. for Stone Ridge.
