Martial Artists Win 11 Gold Medals
Martial artists from Reston and Ashburn brought back some gold from Salt Lake City, Utah, after competing in the Amateur Athletic Union's 2002 National Karate Championship. Over 1,500 karate students from across the U.S. participated in the event, which took place last week at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Participants included boys and girls of all ages, and men and women who competed in traditional Karate Kata (forms), Kobudo (weapons Kata) and Kumite (free sparring).
Competitors from Northern Virginia included 35 members of Williams Martial Arts and fitness of Reston and Ashburn. Williams students won 11 gold medals, 26 silver medals, and 14 bronze medals.
Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Bryan Ciaccio graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center. He is the son of Pamela R. Darr and Andrew L. Ciaccio, both residents of the area. Ciaccio endured an eight-week program which taught academics, practical instruction on military customs, water safety, and various other skills.
Timothy E. Knotts of Reston became the new District Leader of the North District of the Virginia Elks Association, part of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Knotts was also taught the Order's accomplishments, including the charitable donations it has made to provide scholarships and educational grants. His new title makes him accountable for continuing the tradition of charity and patriotism throughout the community.
Elizabeth Minehart, daughter of Anita Minehart of Herndon, has won a college scholarship from Boston Properties, Inc. Minehart is a student at Guilford College.
