Koshare Indian Dancers Entertain Boy Scouts
The Koshare Indian Dancers (KIDs) drew a crowd of 500 Scouts and families for a program of authentic dances from both the plains tribes and pueblo societies on Saturday, Aug. 10 at Washington and Lee High School in Arlington.
The performance was attended by Arlington and McLean members of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s honor society, which fosters Indian culture, traditions and dance.
The KIDs are Boy Scouts of Troop 332 of La Junta, CO. The Troop began doing Indian dance in 1933.
Opening with a danced presentation of the American and other flags, the 75-minute program began with the Pueblo belt dance, danced by those going on a journey to remind them of the ties that bind them to their tribe.
The non-stop show included two different eagle dances, the shield dance by two clashing warriors, the forlorn ghost dance, and a Pueblo hoop dancer using four hoops. New dancers performed the antelope dance, telling the story of a wolf’s attack on young antelope. A hoop dance with a flaming hoop brought rousing applause.
Koshare Chief David Pierson led a team of 13 dancers, accompanied by three drummers who chanted, sang and beat a large powwow drum.
Church Goes on Mission to Maine
Twenty-three youth and six adults from Christ The King Lutheran Church in Great Falls recently completed a mission trip to Lubec, Maine, the eastern-most town in the US. They spent the week performing needed repairs on homes in the area. The group would like to thank the Great Falls community for their support of fundraising efforts for this trip, especially for the car washes at the Great Falls Exxon.
2002 Torchbearer Member of the Year Honored by LFI Fairfax
Donna Fleming of Vienna is the 2002 Torchbearer Member of the Year Award recipient from Leadership Fairfax Inc. (LFI). Fleming, an LFI graduate of ’99, received the award at the June commencement ceremony for the 2002 graduates.
The Torchbearer Member of the Year Award recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions by LFI members that have enhanced the organization and moved it forward in the achievement of its mission. Fleming is chair of the Development Committee and was specifically recognized for her efforts in building a tradition of long-term sustainability for Leadership Fairfax through a solid financial foundation. As committee chairman, Fleming also continued to build the relationship between LFI and the corporate community by working with LFI’s Circle of Sponsors.
Working closely with her vice chair, Suzanne Keating, Fleming profiled the 2002 LFI class in its impact, influence and reach in the community. Fleming also worked with the board of directors to frame members understanding of their personal and organizational roles of stewardship to Leadership Fairfax.
This coming year she will turn toward establishing an advisory council to assist in recruiting outstanding candidates from the community for both the LFI and ELI programs, to work on building an endowment for LFI’s long-term financial health, and to assist LFI in keeping its collective pulse on community issues. Fleming is the senior vice president of Zimmerman Associates Inc, a company located in Vienna.
People Notes
Bill Bestimt of Vienna has been named an honorary member of Leadership Fairfax Inc. (LFI). Bestimt was awarded this status for his position as chairman of the founding advisory council that launched the Leadership Fairfax program in 1987 under the original auspices of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce.
Bestimt, former chairman of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and a longtime community leader, worked with an advisory team and staff to initiate a community leadership program centered on Fairfax County and the Northern Virginia region. He currently works for Toll Brothers, a residential construction company.
Randy Greehan, an attorney with Walton & Adams P.C. of McLean, accepted the 2002 Torchbearer Committee of the Year Award on behalf of the Leadership Fairfax Program (LFI) Committee during the June commencement ceremony for 2002 Leadership Fairfax graduates. Greehan, a graduate of the LFI Class of ’98, attended the national conference of community leadership association during his chairmanship of the program committee, to both share and take advantage of the best practices in community leadership programs across the nation.
The Torchbearer Committee of the Year Award recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions by an LFI committee that have enhanced the organization and moved it forward in the achievement of its mission. The LFI Program Committee serves as the trustee of the LFI curriculum.
