Cavaliers Rolls Past South County to Region Finals
With a 28-9 victory against Patriot District rival, the W.T. Woodson varsity football team has punched its ticket to the Northern Region AAA Finals.
Running back Jonathon Stokes broke a 66-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to open up the scoring for Woodson and quarterback Connor Reilly followed Stokes’ score with a 55-yard touchdown pass to Colin Dempsey.
South County had trouble breaching the Cavaliers’ strong defense as David Jordan scored the lone touchdown for the Stallions in the second quarter.
The Cavaliers will face off with Patriot District foe Lake Braddock at home on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 1:30 p.m.
The Northern Region Finals is a re-match of a budding Patriot District rivalry.
Lake Braddock defeated Robinson 38-7 on Friday, Nov. 20 to earn its spot in the finals. During the regular season, Woodson defeated Lake Braddock 43-42 on Sept. 11.
Buford To Play for Villanova
On Nov. 13, senior Fairfax High School basketball player Lauren Buford signed her National Letter of Intent to play for Villanova University.
Buford led the Rebels last season with an average of 23.6 points per game, topping the Lady Rebels in all statistical categories.
She was a First Team All Region and All Concorde District selection in the 2008-09 season.
The Villanova Wildcats play in the Big East Conference and finished the 2008-09 season with a 19-14 record.
Hauser Bucknell Bound
W.T. Woodson senior Bob Hauser signed his National Letter of Intent to wrestle for Bucknell University on Nov. 12.
Bucknell University is located in Lewisburg, Pa., and is a member of the Patriot League.
Hauser is the current Liberty District Champion at 119 pounds and is the No. 1 ranked 119-pound wrestler in the Northern Region for the 2009-10 season.
"It's a program that is on the rise, and I really like the coaches there," Hauser said.
Lisa Brooks Named Scholar All-American
On July 1, The College Swimming Coaches Association of America selected Lisa A. Brooks, now a junior at The Catholic University of America, in Washington, D.C., as an Individual Scholar All-American for the 2008-09 Division III swimming season.
Brooks met the women’s NCAA qualifying standard for the 100-yard breast stroke with a time of 1:05:15, and swam in the March National Championship at the University of Minnesota.
Brooks set Landmark Conference and CUA records in the 100 and 200 breast stroke the last two years. She is also on the dean’s list at CUA, majoring in biology, with a minor in German.
Brooks, a 2007 graduate of Fairfax High School, is a parishioner of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Clifton.
She has swum for Mason Makos, Chase Club Sharks and Fairfax Rebels.
Indoor Lacrosse Registration
Northern Virginia West Lacrosse (NoVa West) is currently in the process of registering for its indoor lacrosse season.
The group is also accepting registrations for tryouts in its summer select teams, which include U11, U13, U15 and two levels of high school play.
